Annual Solar Oven Bakeoff

Venue: The gorgeous Olive Pink Botanic Garden, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia

About: This annual cooking competition, now in its second year, will show a range of solar oven designs and the delicious meals which can be prepared in them. Award categories include oven design and use of local bush foods. Overall winner receives the Green Spoon Trophy. Judges include respected food writer and cook Stephanie Alexander.

 Entry forms for the Solar Oven Bakeoff will be available soon. Prizes and judges are also being finalised.

 

Other Alice events: The Bakeoff is part of  Olive Pink’s Sustainability Fair,  an event of the Alice Desert Festival. The morning of September 20th is also the final of the Bushfoods/ wild foods competition.  On September 17th is the Sunchase 2008 Model Solar Vehicle Challenge.

Organizer: Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob is an information hub assisting Central Australians to live more sustainable lifestyles. It consists of a network of over 500 households in Alice Springs committed to saving on energy and water bills and reducing our environmental impact by using less electricity, water, and petrol. Through simple changes in their daily habits and purchasing decisions these household are leading the way in cool solutions for desert living.

The DKA COOLmob is a joint initiative of Desert Knowledge Australia and the Arid Lands Environment Centre The project originally started as part of the Australian Greenhouse Office national Cool Communities program in 2002 and has been assisting Alice Springs residents ever since.
