Use of Solar Energy in Afghanistan
SummaryOne of the priorities is the installation of a centre for renewable energies in the province of Wardak. The centre shall be used for the production of solar lanterns, small wind turbines, solar dryers for food, solar cookers and solar warm water heaters.
At the same time the centre shall work on creating public awareness about the roll of renewable energies and protection of the environment.
It will serve as a training centre for the unemployed youth. We will give training in production, installation and maintenance of the equipments. This means the youth can learn a profession, earn a living and therefore gain a perspective in life.

Solar drying for small business units and private use in rural areas.

The Bedmoschk Solar Center is supported by the Solar Food Processing Network.

Detailed Description

In August 2005 a solar dryer with an area of absorption of 2m² was built at the Bedmoschk Solar Center. A small ventilator which is directly powered from a solar module generates the air flow through the dryer. The area for drying is 1m². For testing apricots were dryed. The apricots took almost as long to dry as with the habitual drying on the flat roofs of the houses, but they were cleaner. This means that the quality of the product was increased by protecting it from dust and insects.
Further tests will be done to optimise the air flow and required time for drying.
The aim is to use a bigger version of this dryer for drying the locally grown fruit in a quality that can be sold.
